45 beautiful vintage photos of children with their school bags

A school cone, also called a sugar cone in some parts of Germany, is a large, cone-shaped, cornucopia-like container made of paper, cardboard or plastic.

When children in Germany and the bordering parts of the Czech Republic, parts of Poland (Greater Poland, Upper Silesia, Warmia), Austria, German-speaking Switzerland, and Belgium set off for their first day of school, their parents and/or grandparents hand them this large bag, beautifully decorated and filled with toys, chocolate, candy, school supplies, and various other special treats.

The school cone is given to children as a gift to sweeten their long-awaited first day of school. Below you’ll find a series of lovely vintage photos showing children with their school cones.
