Ed Miliband was invited onto Thursday’s BBC Breakfast, where he was quizzed by presenter Charlie Stayt on how the UK economy has seen slower than expected growth of just 0.1 per cent in the three months to September. Stayt began: “Economic growth has slowed to 0.01 percentage points for the last three months. The economy is slowing – I wondered if I could get your reaction?” Miliband replied: “Well, these are disappointing figures, Charlie, and the Government is very focused on taking the actions that can get growth going in our economy, as that’s the way to raise living standards.”

A second added: “Labour isn’t working.” Meanwhile, a third wrote: “It’s understandable to feel concerned about these economic developments.”

A fourth commented: “The people have never been so badly off as they are under this incompetent lot!”

Another wrote: “Yippee @RachelReevesMP and @Keir_Starmer fixing the country, when fixing means destroying.”

Chancellor Rachel Reeves admitted there is “more to do to build an economy that works for working people”.

Meanwhile, shadow chancellor Mel Stride said: “Today’s ONS figures show the economy shrank in the latest month, under a prime minister and chancellor who are in office but not in power.

“Only the Conservatives have a leader with a backbone and a plan to deliver £47bn of savings – allowing us to cut tax and cut the deficit under our Golden Economic Rule.”

BBC Breakfast airs daily on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
