Auschwitz-Birkenau, 1941–1945: Otto Moll – Overseer of the Crematoria and Lessons from a Dark PastOtto Moll (1915–1946) was a notorious SS officer at Auschwitz-Birkenau, responsible for managing the crematoria complex, where thousands of people were killed and their bodies were cremated.

He played a key role in the extermination process, ensuring that the crematoria and gas chambers operated efficiently.
As the head of the crematoria, Moll was responsible for overseeing the disposal of bodies, including the use of mass graves and open-air burning pits. His actions were part of the Nazi’s systematic effort to eliminate the Jewish population and other minority groups.

Testimonies from Sonderkommando prisoners and 1945 Dachau trial records reveal Moll’s involvement in the mass extermination. He was convicted of murder and participation in war crimes, and was hanged at Landsberg Prison on May 28, 1946.

Moll’s story is a reminder of the dangers of hatred, prejudice, and dehumanization. We must work together to promote tolerance, understanding, and respect for human rights.
