Humiliation and psychological destruction: Germans forcibly shave the beards of Jewish men
Orthodox Jews viewed their beards and their beards as an important aspect of their religious identity. Shaving these beards not only deprived them of their “identity” and was embarrassing, but their hairless faces and shaved heads (the latter also applied to women) also made them appear alien and less human. This dehumanization made it easier for “civilized” German soldiers to perceive Jews as subhumans , a lower form of human being, or even non-humans worthy of isolation and/or extermination.
