Luftwaffe ace Werner Mölders dies in a plane crash near Breslau.
Mölders was the first pilot in the history of air combat to exceed the mark of 100 aircraft shot down.
In total, he shot down 101 aircraft during World War II and 14 more in the Spanish Civil War.
He quickly rose through the military ranks, becoming a squadron captain at just 27 years old. He reached the rank of colonel and was appointed Inspector of Fighter Pilots on August 7, 1941.
Mölders died in a plane crash on his way from Crimea to Germany to attend the funeral of Ernst Udet.
