Rare color photographs document everyday life in the Berlin refugee camp Marienfelde in 1961 _de
The Marienfelde Refugee Transit Camp in Marienfelde, Berlin, was one of three camps West Germany maintained during the Cold War to cope with the large waves of immigration from East Germany, particularly between 1950 and 1961. Refugees arriving in West Berlin were brought to the camp, where they received medical treatment, food, identification papers, and shelter until they could be permanently resettled in the West. Below are some of the rare color photographs capturing daily life in Berlin’s Marienfelde Refugee Transit Camp in September 1961.
