This collection features photos from World War II that aren’t necessarily unusual—let’s just say, not entirely standard or textbook. The conflict affected virtually every part of the world during the years 1939–1945.
In many ways, the war was a continuation of the conflicts left behind by World War I after a troubled 20-year hiatus. With 40 to 50 million deaths, World War II was not only the bloodiest conflict but also the largest war in history.
World War II changed the political direction and social structure of the world. The United Nations was founded to promote international cooperation and prevent future conflicts. The victorious major powers—China, France, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States—became permanent members of the Security Council.
The Soviet Union and the United States emerged as rival superpowers, paving the way for the Cold War, which lasted nearly half a century. After the devastation of Europe, the influence of its major powers declined, leading to the decolonization of Africa and Asia.
Most countries whose industries had been damaged sought economic recovery and expansion. Political and economic integration, especially in Europe, began as an attempt to prevent future hostilities, end pre-war enmities, and create a sense of common identity.

I guess I’m just an impulsive woman.” ( For more information on this picture, click here ).
