TalkTV host Kevin O’Sullivan was left enraged as he shared exclusive footage of illegal migrants aggressively confronting a photographer on the coast of France. On Monday (May 25), the 70-year-old broadcaster returned to the airwaves to discuss the biggest stories hitting the headlines. It didn’t take long for things to turn political as he welcomed political commentator Isabel Oakeshott onto the show to discuss the new footage taken at Wissant, in Northern France, over the bank holiday weekend.
The presenter immediately launched into a fierce rant on air, calling out the disappointing response from the French police officers at the scene, who did little to deter the migrants from arguing with a photographer. He fumed: “Now it’s perfectly lawful for that photographer to take photos of those guys.
“But I suppose we can understand that they have no comprehension of the law, so they’re telling him not to take pictures. But what is disturbing about this, though, is these migrants’ tremendous sense of entitlement.
“They’re saying, ‘Get out of our way, we’re about to get on a boat. We’re going to Britain, you can’t take our picture.’ Well, they can take your pictures, that’s not against the law. And the photographer is calling on the French police to do their job, to protect him in his legal pursuit of his profession, by taking his pictures.
“But the cops aren’t doing anything. If you watch this footage carefully, one of the cops towards the end tells the photographer that he shouldn’t be taking these pictures because he’s treating these migrants like animals. No he’s not, he’s doing his job, he’s taking pictures perfectly legally.
“But it proves that the French police are taking our money, our £662million – in fact, more than a billion over the last three or four years. They don’t really protect the law on these beaches, and certainly seem to show favouritism towards the migrants who want to set sail in illegal boats to the promised land. It’s quite something, isn’t it?”
It was at this point that the political commentator shared her thoughts on the new footage, and urged the government to reevaluate its deal with the French police force. She argued: ” This extraordinary footage raises so many questions and reinforces so much of what you and I have talked about on this show so often.
“Here, we have the French police armed up to the teeth with pepper spray and their silly little riot shields, and they’re doing absolutely nothing as a group of migrants gather on the beach ahead of trying to get to the UK. Even worse, we have a very aggressive there, an illegal immigrant, who starts angrily confronting a photographer who is fully entitled under French law to be working on that public beach.
“He was standing a very respectful distance away from the migrants, which, frankly, is more than they deserved, and the French police’s instinct is to go after the photographer. We see the migrant trying to clutch a rock to throw it at the photographer.
“This is disgraceful, it really is disgraceful, and the French police appear to have turned most of their resources now on trying to target those who are capturing their own inadequacy. What the government is doing, continuing to fund this complete charade with the French police, is beggar’s belief. We should be demanding the money back.”
It didn’t take long before viewers flocked to social media to share their fury online, with one user declaring: “Why would the French stop them? They don’t want them; they want to get rid of them as soon as possible. It’s been obvious right from the first payment we made; in fact, it’s got worse. We have all the evidence they are not trying, so let’s put in for a refund from Macron.”
Another agreed: “The cheek of the French police telling the photographer that he’s treating this illegal migrant like animals when he’s doing nothing wrong.” A third fumed: “The primary duty of the government is to ensure the safety and security of UK citizens. They are blatantly failing to protect us.”
Meanwhile, another argued: “We’ve got to stop blaming the French. If the show were on the other foot and all of these scumbags were trying to leave British shores, would we be stopping them? I doubt it. We have our navy in the ocean pushing them back. It worked from Australia and other countries.”
